What to do right now

These steps can protect the tooth and ease pain until you see a dentist. They do not replace a dental visit.

  • Toothache

    1. Rinse your mouth with warm salty water.
    2. Floss gently around the tooth to clear any trapped food.
    3. Hold a cold pack on your cheek, 15 minutes at a time.
    4. Take pain relief as the packet directs. Never hold a tablet against the gum.

Call us if the pain keeps you awake or lasts more than a day.

  • Knocked-out adult tooth

    1. Pick the tooth up by the white crown. Do not touch the root.
    2. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk. Do not scrub it.
    3. Push it gently back into the socket. Bite on a clean cloth to hold it.
    4. If it will not go back, keep it in a cup of milk.

Every minute counts. Call us straight away. Never put a baby tooth back.

  • Broken or chipped tooth

    1. Rinse gently with warm water.
    2. Keep any broken pieces in milk or a clean, sealed container.
    3. Use a cold pack on your cheek if your lip or face swells.
    4. Chew on the other side. Sugar-free gum can cover a sharp edge for now.

Call us today if the tooth hurts or a large piece has broken off.

  • Swelling or a gum abscess

    1. Press a cold pack gently on your cheek.
    2. Rinse with warm salty water a few times a day.
    3. Never put heat on the swelling. Do not squeeze a lump on the gum.
    4. Take pain relief as the packet directs.

Swelling near your eye or neck, a fever, or trouble swallowing: go to hospital first.

  • Lost filling or crown

    1. Keep the crown somewhere safe and bring it with you.
    2. Do not glue it back with household glue.
    3. Ask a pharmacist about temporary dental filling material.
    4. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet food on that side.

Book a visit soon. An open tooth can decay or break further.

  • Bleeding after an extraction

    1. Fold a clean piece of gauze. Bite on it firmly for 30 minutes.
    2. Sit upright. Do not rinse, spit or drink through a straw.
    3. Skip hot drinks, smoking and alcohol for the rest of the day.

Bleeding that keeps going despite firm pressure needs urgent care.

Not sure what to do? Call (08) 9466 3600 and describe what happened.

When to go to hospital instead

Some emergencies need a hospital before a dentist. Go straight to the emergency department (ED) of your nearest hospital, or ring 000, if you notice any of these:

  • Swelling in your face or neck that makes it hard to breathe or swallow.
  • Swelling that spreads towards your eye, or comes with a high fever.
  • A hard blow to the face or jaw, a possible broken jaw, or a head injury.
  • Bleeding from the mouth that does not stop with firm pressure.
  • Deep cuts to your lips, tongue or face.

Once the hospital has treated you, call us to book a dental follow-up.

Outside our opening hours and unsure where to go? Call healthdirect on 1800 022 222 to speak with a registered nurse.

FAQs

Emergency dentist questions

How much does an emergency dentist cost in Perth?

Can I walk in without an appointment?

Please call first on (08) 9466 3600. A call lets our front desk check the schedule and book you in.

What should I do if a dental emergency happens outside your opening hours?

For severe swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a serious injury, head to a hospital ED or ring 000. For anything else, follow the first-aid steps above. Then call us when we open, at 8:30 am on weekdays and 8:00 am on Saturday.

Is a toothache a dental emergency?

It can be. Severe pain, pain that wakes you at night, or pain with swelling or fever needs a dentist soon. A mild ache still needs a check, because it can be a sign of decay or infection.

Do you see children for dental emergencies?

Yes. Our dentists treat children as well as adults. Never put a knocked-out baby tooth back in. Eligible children may qualify for free dental care up to $1,095 every two years under the CDBS. See our kids dentist page.

Can I claim emergency dental treatment on my health fund?

Often, yes, if your extras cover includes dental. What you get back depends on your fund and your level of cover. Our on-site HICAPS system lets you claim instantly with your health fund card.

Do I need a referral to see an emergency dentist?

No. You can call and book directly. You do not need a referral from a doctor to see a general dentist.
